New Real Films is a Canadian feature film production company and winner of the CMPA/Toronto International Film Festival's producer of the year award. 

​New Real's award-winning run has given birth to many classic feature films and has inspired some of Canada's greatest filmmaking talent spawning 17 feature films and counting. New Real has made a brand out of fearlessly exploring cinematic stories about outsiders who find redemption in unpredictable ways. Among many honours, New Real Films won TIFF/CMPA's producer of the year in 2019.

 

Our latest films are Seeds, Kaniehtiio Horn's debut feature as writer director starring Kaniehtiio Horn, Dallas Goldtooth and Graham Greene. Seeds was a TIFF top TEN in 2024 and won the DGC's Best first feature award. It was nominated for 4 Canadian Screen awards winning Best Supporting Actor for Graham Greene's irreverent role.The Stock Market Boy, Kipkemboi directed by Charles Uwagbai written by Joel Richardson starring Thamela Mpumlwana was nominated for a NAACP Award 2024 and 8 African Academy Awards winning Best Actress. Kicking Blood that had its world premiere at TIFF and was nominated for a Best Director Leo in 2022 and was sold to XYZ Films and Apple+ in the US. ​

 

New Real produced Born To Be Blue starring Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo and Callum Keith Rennie written and directed by Robert Budreau. This biopic reimagining the life of Chet Baker was a multi-award winning film that was theatrically released by eOne Entertainment, IFC Films and Universal. It was nominated for 5 Canadian Screen Awards winning both Original Score and Best Song. ​

 

​New Real also produced Gerontophilia by Bruce LaBruce, which premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and won Best Canadian Feature at Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinema as well as Trigger directed by Bruce McDonald starring Molly Parker and Tracy Wright which was selected as one of TIFF’s Top Ten films and was nominated for 4 Canadian Screen Awards. New Real produced  I'm Yours, written and directed by Leonard Farlinger starring Karine Vanasse and Rossif Sutherland which premiered at TIFF. New Real also produced DGC Best Director winner Leslie, My Name is Evil, about Charles Manson and his followers which premiered at TIFF and was sold to Lionsgate. New Real produced Otto; or Up with Dead People which premiered at Sundance and the Berlinale and All Hat starring Rachael Leigh Cook, Luke Kirby and Keith Carradine which premiered at TIFF and sold to Myriad Pictures and Universal.

 

New Real produced Monkey Warfare starring Don McKellar and Tracy Wright which won a Special Jury Prize at TIFF and was selected Top Ten. New Real executive-produced Cake starring Heather Graham as well as Sugar, winner of the Inside Out Film Festival.The Perfect Son written and directed by Leonard Farlinger starring Colm Feore and David Cubitt, another TIFF premiere, and was nominated for two Best Actor Canadian Screen Awards.

Winner of TIFF/CMPA award for best Canadian producer Jennifer Jonas' extraordinary career has spawned dozens of award-winning feature films and countless television specials.

Jennifer produced All Hat starring Luke Kirby and Rachel Leigh Cooke directed by Leonard Farlinger which premiered at TIFF as well as Monkey Warfare starring Don McKellar and Tracy Wright which won a special jury prize at TIFF and was selected Top Ten. She produced Don McKellar's feature Childstar starring Jennifer Jason Leigh with Rhombus Media which was nominated for 5 Canadian Screen Awards. She produced The Perfect Son written and directed by Leonard Farlinger starring David Cubitt and Colm Feore which premiered at TIFF and was nominated for 2 Best Actor Canadian Screen Awards.   

For television, Jennifer produced Grammy nominated, Satie and Suzanne as well as Firebird and Elizabeth Rex for Rhombus Media. As 1st Assistant Director, Jennifer worked with François Girard on Peter Gabriel's Secret World and Academy Award-winning The Red Violin as well as Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould.

Jennifer was co-chair of the CMPA and Film Ontario.

Leonard Farlinger writer/director/producer

Leonard has had a wild and varied career. An undaunted filmmaker and iconoclast, he's left his unique imprint as a writer, director and producer on each of the films New Real has made.

 

His latest films as a producer are Seeds, Kaniehtiio Horn's comedic debut feature as writer director starring Kaniehtiio Horn, Dallas Goldtooth and Graham Greene. He directed the MOW, In the Dark  starring Kathleen Robertson which won a Canadian Screen Award. His first feature as writer director entitled The Perfect Son starring David Cubitt and Colm Feore premiered at TIFF and was nominated for 2 Canadian Screen Awards for Best Actor. 

As Producer, Leonard's credits include Bruce McDonald's Trigger starring Molly Parker and Tracy Wright which was selected as a Top Ten at TIFF and was nominated for 4 Canadian Screen Awards. He produced two Bruce LaBruce films Gerontophilia which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won Best Film at the Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal and Otto; or, Up with Dead People which premiered at Sundance and the Berlinale. Leonard also produced Leslie, My Name is Evil which premiere at TIFF and Monkey Warfare which premiered at TIFF where it won a special Jury prize.  

 

Leonard's latest screenplay is entitled The Wrong Guy.

 

Leonard has mentored scriptwriting in Kenya and Tanzania as part of The Maisha Film Lab and in Toronto at the Canadian Film Center and as part of the City Project. Leonard taught film production at Humber College and York University.
